This
leg of the trip took two days by car. But the pilgrimage, to the
home of longtime University of Texas-El Paso coach Don (The Bear)
Haskins, was well worth it. This turned out to be the final season
on the bench for Haskins, the man who prosecuted what has been called
college basketballs Brown v. Board of Educationthe
1966 NCAA title game in which UTEP, then Texas Western, used five
black starters to beat a heavily favored, all-white Kentucky team.
I arrived in El Paso with a number of preconceived notions in tow,
about both Haskins and history. Not all of them survived the visit.
Heres Rich Clarksons classic shot of the Kentucky bench
in the aftermath of Texas Westerns victory.
