truth of the phrase "six degrees of separation" revealed
itself to me during this stopover. Before I lit out for Tel Aviv,
a friend had given me the number of Steve Kaplan, a Rutgers star
who had gone on to play in Israel and eventually settled there.
At the same time I’d thrown into a briefcase several newspaper
clippings: about the conversion of Americans to Judaism for basketball
purposes, and about the religious and jurisprudential odyssey of
a 6’11" New Jerseyean named Aulcie Perry.Little did I know that Kaplan would lead me to Perry, his old nemesis. And that from Perry I’d hear the most astonishing story. Pictured above is the original account in the New York Times reporting Perry’s 1986 arraignment on charges of heroin trafficking. There’s much more to this tale, and you’ll find it in chapter 15.
