I
was astonished to find that ballplayers in Ireland, even as late
as the cusp of the 21st century, couldnt take for granted
the simplest of basketball accommodations: a roof over their heads.
At the same time, their efforts to find shelter led me to some of
the most engaging stories among all the tales I collected during
my year on the road.
From Neptune Stadium in Cork (funded by blue-haired, bingo-playing
ladies), to the grandiose National Basketball Arena in Dublin (the
work of an American billionaire philanthropist and a Chicago union
boss, among others), there has at least been some progress.
Here is Irelands National Basketball Arena, so named, one
Dubliner told me, "so Irish kids can say theyve played
in the NBA."
