Dr.
James Naismith invented basketball with a particular purpose in
mind: to further the cause of "muscular Christianity,"
which held that sport and exercise are essential to a clean, well-rounded,
God-fearing life. More than a century later, one piece of that strategyto
tucker out young men so they cant follow their natural inclination
to make mischiefhad become enshrined in scores of midnight
basketball leagues, founded in inner cities across the country.
I went to Kansas City to learn more about Mayors Night Hoops,
the program begun by former mayor Emanuel Cleaver, who had since
returned to his pulpit at St. James United Methodist Church.
Here is Doc Naismith, astride a horse in France during World War
I, where he became as confirmed as ever in his belief that idleness
leads to no good.
